Art: 21

What does it mean to be an artist in the 21st century?

Art:21, a celebrated PBS documentary series on contemporary art, explores this issue and many more. Over the course of 5 seasons (4 episodes each season), Art:21 has documented the work and lives of more than 84 contemporary artists. Each episode focuses on a theme (romance, paradox, stories) and profiles 4 to 6 contemporary artists with work somehow related to that theme. Artists profiled include William Kentridge, Richard Serra, Cindy Sherman, and Yinka Shonibare, and many other greats.

The artists frankly discuss their work, their lives, challenges, vision, working process, etc. in their own words, outside of mediating presences such as the gallery. As the artists speak, beautifully shot film footage illustrates the journey and the artwork. Art:21 offers you an intimate look at contemporary art through the eyes and mouths of the artists that create it. Check out one or all five of the complete season DVDs today, along with their fully illustrated companion texts.
