A to Z GIS: An Illustrated Dictionary of Geographic Information Systems. Shelly Sommer (Editor), Tasha Wade (Editor). 2006. ESRI Press. 288p. (pa)
Take a look inside the book! A picture is worth a thousand words!
If you taking a class on Geographic information systems (GIS), trying to earn a Certificate in GIS or just discovering the interdisciplinary nature of GIS, this colorful, portable and handy (5 ¼- by 8-inch size) dictionary will be indispensable for you as a student.
This dictionary published by ESRI, which designs and develops the world's leading geographic information system (GIS) technology and also provides training and publishes textbooks. Definitions were written, developed, and contributed by more than 150 subject-matter experts. A to Z GIS was created from a database of terms and definitions that is also the source for the GIS Dictionary on the ESRI Support Center.
The print version contains more than 1,800 terms covering the entire lexicon of geographic information systems from rapidly evolving uses of GIS for modeling, GIScience, and Web-based GIS; and the GIS foundation fields of cartography, spatial statistics, computer science, surveying, geodesy, and remote sensing.
The dictionary is easy to use, has 400 full-color illustrations (which seem to be cartoonish versions of scientific illustrations). It has seven encyclopedia-style appendix articles about annotation and labels, features, geometry, layers in ArcGIS® software, map projections and coordinate systems, remote sensing, and topology.
There are not very many GIS dictionaries in print, so this addition to the field is welcome.
